Hello, I am writing to express my strong disappointment with my experience using GitHub Student benefits. It took me a great deal of time and effort to get accepted into the program, so I expected the benefit to be genuinely useful once I was approved. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience at all. Today, when I tried to use it in VS Code, I repeatedly received messages saying that too many API calls were being made. Then, after only a couple of hours of use, I was informed that I had already exhausted my monthly package. Frankly, this feels unacceptable. It was more difficult to get accepted into the program than to receive any meaningful benefit from it. A student program should provide real support, not a frustrating and highly limited experience almost immediately after activation. I am very disappointed and would like a clear explanation of why this happened, how these limits are being applied, and whether there is any way to resolve this issue. Sonnet is shit, the first time i used it for example config it generated 5 almost identical documentation files for no reason when I askked 1. Opus was 3x more credits for how much 10 - 20% more performance? 5.3 codex is basically the same thing as GPT 5.4 with 1x credits and does exactly what i ask it for. |

I have found a solution, switching to Claude Code. Is it a better product? Maybe, haven't used it enough. At least they don't forcibly stop me from using it though. Can't even remove myself from the education plan. BTW if you sign up for AWS and use Claude Code via Amazon Bedrock, it's completely free to sign up and you get 200USD in credit, with 6 months to use it. And unlike GitHub Copilot, they don't stop you from using models. It is a bit of a setup, but I can answer any questions if you need help. |

@martinwoodward Please reconsider this change. Many students relied specifically on models like Sonnet and Opus for studying, research, and solving complex programming problems. These models were the reason Copilot was so helpful for us. Without them, Copilot becomes far less useful for academic work. Most students cannot afford paid plans, so this change does not push us to upgrade it only pushes us away from using Copilot. We respectfully ask you to restore at least limited access to these models for students. |

@ghaif You have to understand there are verified educators here who are saying this. the fre eplan runs out the moment you graduate so I think its justified, plus there are so many more solutions like more rate limiting or day wise limiting or making the requests 10x instead of 1 x or 3x but gatekeeping the models, that just shows no cinsideration. We have to also remember that Microsoft & Github ensure that these same students who eventually join / start ocmpanies will take the familiarity of these tools with them. |

it's not being greedy, it's about betraying us with no notice. Look at the recent changes made to Scratch. They changed their ToS to something very anti-user friendly and terrible. Scratch is completely free though, so we shouldn't be mad about something that's free, right? Is that what you're saying? Your family didn't have to raise you. They didn't have to feed you or care for you. So if your family stopped helping you ever at all without any notice, would you be sad? |

Specific recommendations for basic fairness:
The current approach risks eroding trust in GitHub Education entirely. Students don't expect unlimited enterprise-grade compute forever, but they do expect good faith when a program is branded as "free access to Copilot Pro." A binary "pay or lose everything" ultimatum undermines the educational mission that made the Student Developer Pack legendary. |

Yeah but like what's majority of AI companies are doing ex. OpenAI, Anthropic especially OpenAI when it started to lift off is that they ask for funding from higher up companies like Nvidia or Microsoft and they say like "Oh hey I have 10M+ users a month and im getting pretty good gross and AI is going to be everything in a couple years, maybe you should pitch in some money and we'll use that to get more servers and better llms." |

That's not fully accurate though. Microsoft's $10B+ investment in OpenAI and their $300M+ investment in Anthropic aren't just financial stakes with no strings attached, those deals come with commercial agreements that include API access and usage terms as part of the package. Microsoft doesn't just pay random market rate for every single token like some random startup would. The whole point of being a major investor and cloud partner (Azure OpenAI Service, Amazon Bedrock for Anthropic) is that you negotiate favorable terms. So saying the usage costs are "completely separate" from the investment/funding deals is oversimplifying it a lot. |

After some research, I will say you are correct, however not paying market rate will still incur a loss if you have 100's of thousands of non-paying customers. In addition, when Microsoft gives Anthropic cloud server usage, in exchange for subsidized Api usage, that also incurs them depreciation, electricity, and management costs. At the end of the day a company is focused on making money. |

Honestly, google antigravity provides a way better deal now. Especially with the AI having to be able to see and verify styling for your website. And per regional pricing plans are better and affordable. Fixing styling issue actually fixes it unlike what copilot provides (granted, could do it myself, which i did in the end. But a farcry of what the plan was capable of) TL:DR: just switch to antigravity. From the first looks its a much better experience than what gh did with copilot education |

Nothing, and thats Microslop for you. OpenAI probably giving them a back hand to favour their AI in auto mode over claude. Even though it was stated that Claude can still be picked in Auto mode for complex tasks. I gave copilot the most complex task that I could think off and CodeX worked on the task, which yet again it failed to do. OpenAI does not have the AI for coding, that will always be Claude. |

Sorry, but this change is terrible for students like me. I loved to use GitHub Copilot, but the only models I can use right now are models that are over a year old and not even close to SOTA. And worst of all, most showcased models are deprecated and will be removed soon. Not even the latest Gemini or GPT model. Same for Claude, where we get the smallest possible model that is over a generation behind the current one... Will switch to my OpenAI subscription. At least there, I get way higher rate limits and the latest version of Codex... What a shame.... |

That's how it works, OpenAI's models are way more cheaper, GitHub Copilot is losing money on every student user. I don't know if you've ever tried using the Claude API directly in Claude Code, I have gone through 70USD in 2 hours, and in those 2 hours it did 1/4 as GitHub Copilot with the same model (Opus 4.6) did. |

You think companies like github or microslop are paying full price for the AI? There will always discounts for big companies like them, they will never pay full price like a consumer. Github Student pack is supposed to help us and educators, not cripple them and thats what they are doing with just leaving us with CodeX. Just remove CodeX no one likes it, it doesnt help at all it doesnt teach it doesnt do shit. Its just there for decoration. |

They obviously don't pay full price, but even assuming they get a 60% discount, Claude's API is expensive. I would say my monthly spend on Premium Requests, which is about 50-60 usually, would cost over 1k if I was to use the Claude API. My point is giving students 300 premium requests a month, to use on Opus 4.6 is going to lose them money. I understand why you would want it for free, but you can't just expect a handout of a premium model, they are already giving us free models, even if they suck. This is like if you give a hungry man a sandwich, and he says "No, I want a steak instead this isn't good enough". |

Now you have withdrawn all my access by flagging every single request either under "The model claude-sonnet-4.6 is not available for your account. This can happen if the model was disabled by your organization's policy or if your Copilot plan doesn't include access to it." despite it being set on auto Or... Copilot stopped work due to an error I have many many premium requests available, I have only used it twice today (2 requests) and I have left it for 20 minutes before trying again. Since the update, agents also now end before they reach the end of prompts repeatedly, before you could get an agent running for 40-60 mins solidly, now there is no hope in getting past 20, or it doing half the brief. Really frustrating... |

Our commitment to providing free access to GitHub Copilot for verified students is not changing. What is changing is how Copilot is packaged and managed for students.
What this means for you
Starting today, March 12, 2026, your complimentary Copilot access will be managed under a new GitHub Copilot Student plan, alongside your existing GitHub Education benefits. Your academic verification status will not change, and there is nothing you need to do to continue using Copilot. You will see that you are on the GitHub Copilot Student plan in the UI, and your existing premium request unit (PRU) entitlements will remain unchanged.
As part of this transition, however, some premium models, including GPT-5.4, and Claude Opus and Sonnet models, will no longer be available for self-selection under the GitHub Copilot Student Plan. We know this will be disappointing, but we’re making this change so we can keep Copilot free and accessible for millions of students around the world.
That said, through Auto mode, you'll continue to have access to a powerful set of models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. We'll keep adding new models and expanding the intelligence in Auto mode that helps match the right model to your task and workflow. We support a global community of students across thousands of universities and dozens of time zones, so we’re being intentional about how we roll out changes. Over the coming weeks, we will be making additional adjustments to available models or usage limits on certain features — the specifics of which we'll be testing with your feedback.

Your experience matters to us, and your feedback will directly shape how this plan evolves. Leave a comment below, what's working for you, what gets in the way, and what you need most.
