Open Source Software (OSS) powers the digital world we live in today. But behind every repository, issue, and pull request are people and many incredible women helping shape the future of technology.

For International Women’s Day, it’s a great moment to reflect on the women contributing across open source: maintainers, contributors, technical writers, community moderators, educators, and many others who help projects thrive.

Inclusive collaboration habits also play a big role in helping communities grow. Some simple habits that make a difference include:

• Welcoming first-time contributors

• Being thoughtful and respectful in discussions

• Making documentation easy to follow

• Recognizing contributions beyond code

One name that genuinely inspires me is Limor Fried — founder of Adafruit and one of the earliest voices making hardware and open source accessible to everyone, not just experts.
On inclusive collaboration, the single most underrated habit I've seen make a real difference is recognizing non-code contributions, documentation fixes, issue triage, community moderation. These often go unnoticed but quietly hold entire projects together.
What made communities feel welcoming to me personally was maintainers who responded to first-time PRs with patience rather than criticism. That one interaction can determine whether someone stays in open source or walks away.

One person who inspires me in open source is Audrey Tang, who has contributed massively to open source and civic tech. Her work shows how open collaboration can go beyond code and create real social impact.
What makes a community feel welcoming is clear documentation and maintainers who take time to explain the "why" behind decisions, not just the "what." It lowers the barrier for newcomers enormously.
For inclusive collaboration, I think the most impactful habit is simply acknowledging contributions publicly, whether it's a bug report, a documentation fix, or a thoughtful comment. Recognition encourages people to keep showing up.
